CONTECH U.S., LLC Wins Two Awards in 2007 International Die Casting Competition
CONTECH U.S., LLC, a unit of Marathon Automotive Group, has won two prestigious awards in the 2007 International Die Casting Competition sponsored by the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA). The annual competition recognizes outstanding castings based on their design, quality, cost savings, ingenuity, innovation, and industry-changing potential. The winners were honored during the 111th Metalcasting Congress in Houston, Texas, May 15-18, 2007.
CONTECH won the Aluminum, Squeeze/Semi-Solid award for a squeeze cast Rack and Pinion Steering Gear that is supplied to JTEKT for the Toyota Tundra and Sequoia pickup trucks. This is a very large, complex housing produced using CONTECH's P2000 HVSC process. The parts had to meet very tight porosity and burst specifications as well as help absorb loads to prevent distortion of the steel rack bar in the assembled steering gear.
CONTECH also won the Aluminum 1 to 10 lb. category for the Shock Tower used on the BMW X5 vehicles. Using a new casting technology called High-Q- Cast(R), CONTECH and BMW were able to design a one-piece casting to replace the previous design that consisted of seven steel stampings. The High-Q-Cast parts are heat-treatable, can be welded and riveted, and provide a significant weight reduction over a steel stamping design - in this case a 40% weight reduction.
