BorgWarner Supplies R2S Turbocharging Technology for Volkswagens Top Performance Diesel Engines
BorgWarner's R2S Technology Delivers Impressive Road Performance for the 2.0-Liter Diesel Engine Featured in the VW Transporter T5 and Amarok Pickup
BorgWarner's award-winning regulated two-stage (R2S®) turbocharging technology boosts the performance and helps lower emissions for the newly developed 2.0-liter four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine featured in Volkswagen's 180 HP (132 kW) Transporter T5 and new 163 HP (120 kW) Amarok pickup. Both versions of the engine comply with Euro 5 emission standards and deliver a maximum torque of 400 Nm at an engine speed of 1500 rpm, giving the engine impressive pulling power. In addition to these outstanding performance figures, the modern engine technology achieves an efficient fuel consumption of 31 mpg.
"VW's commercial vehicles and pickups demand optimum power output and maximum fuel economy. BorgWarner's highly efficient R2S turbocharging technology delivers both with the added benefit of lower emissions," said Roger Wood, Executive Vice President, BorgWarner. "We value our successful long-standing partnership with Volkswagen and are pleased to collaborate on optimal solutions for powerful downsized diesel engines."
To resolve the conflicting objectives of dynamic response and low emissions, Volkswagen chose BorgWarner's optimized R2S turbocharging technology for its top performance diesel engines. Engineers from BorgWarner used two series-connected turbochargers to deliver continuously high boost pressure over the entire engine speed range with excellent torque characteristics, ensuring an exceptionally dynamic response. The R2S technology helps the new engine achieve a power-to-displacement ratio of 66 kW per liter, setting a benchmark in the light commercial delivery vehicle.
BorgWarner supported the development process with 3D flow analysis of the entire turbocharging system to fine-tune the compact dimensions of the system.
BorgWarner's patented R2S® technology has received several awards, including a 2008 Automotive News PACE Award and the 2008 Automotive News PACE Environmental Award.
