Dassault Systemes Eases Automaker Transition to New Product Development Architecture
In order to gain efficiencies in their global product development process, many automotive OEMs have been turning to Dassault Systemes V6, PLM 2.0 technology, providing designers a “single source of truth” for managing vehicle programs. For some companies, there has been hesitation to change from their existing product development environment (most often Dassault Systemes V5 solution) to the newer, more collaborative V6 approach. This is resolved with the announcement of Dassault Systemes latest V5-V6 compatibility release.
V6 background - why it matters to automotive
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools have always allowed people to collaborate on design and development work, but until the introduction of Dassault Systemes V6, the use has been restricted to designers, engineers and manufacturers. Additionally, the sharing data had to be done under structured conditions, such as scheduled reviews, in order to maintain integrity and control of the most current design information. PLM was a machine-based process, and collaboration was limited to specific locations linked by a wide-area network.
V6 enables virtually anyone to participate in the product development process in real time 3D, no matter where they are. It eliminates the need for cumbersome file transfer, providing access to everyone from a single server. Sharing data and leveraging best-practice information allows projects to seamlessly move across the supply chain and around the globe. Real-time visibility helps meet today’s aggressive delivery schedules, and since there is no “check in and check out,” companies are better able to protect the intellectual property that defines their brands.
For OEMs and suppliers, having one repository for all program data results in dramatic improvements in Bills of Materials management, concept-sharing and in meeting compliance mandates. This means faster time-to-market, reduced costs, better products and the ability to manage operations with efficiency and better returns.
