Automechanika Shanghai 2012 sets new records for exhibitor and visitor attendance

The 2012 edition of Automechanika Shanghai continued its tradition of beating previous show records for exhibitor and visitor attendance, when it was held 11 – 14 December 2012 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, Shanghai, China.

The show which is Asia’s annual leading international trade fair for automotive parts, accessories, equipment and services, was organised by Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd and the China National Automotive Industry International Corporation (CNAICO). It is also the world’s second largest Automechanika, with the largest one being held in Frankfurt, Germany.

The final figures revealed 4,109 exhibitors from 37 countries and regions, a 14 percent increase in the total number of exhibitors. A further breakdown reveals a 33 percent increase in international exhibitors and a 12 percent increase in Chinese exhibitors.

The exhibition space, spread across 17 halls was 180,000 sqms, a 13 percent increase compared to the 2011 show. In terms of visitor numbers, there were 72,190 from 136 countries and regions. (Please refer to the end of the final report for the full list of Automechanika Shanghai figures).

Commenting on the show Mr Jason Cao, Senior General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd said: “Automechanika Shanghai is a one-stop platform for information exchange, networking, promotion, education, marketing as well as business in the industry. Its continued success can be proved by the increased exhibition scale. There are more exhibitors from diverse product sectors especially from repair & maintenance as well as accessories and tuning, which attracted the highest-ever number of international visitors, an increase of 18 percent compared to the 2011 show. Secondly, the show has gained more support from leading international and local trade industry associations and government agencies from across the automotive spectrum which shows its greater influence on the industry. Also, the largest ever fringe programme with 30 sessions were delivered in partnership with more world-class international organisations and research institutes than before.”

Exhibitors praise show as a profitable business platform

Exhibitors in the Parts & Components category included Shanghai International Auto Parts Sourcing Center Co Ltd making its first appearance at the show. The company is an independent aftermarket wholly owned subsidiary of Saic Motor Group. Mr Wang DeXin, Deputy General Manager remarked: “The reputation and influential of the show is growing and it offers a suitable platform for us to find matching customers. In addition, we want to promote our company and establish brand influence. We have also attended other shows in China but think Automechanika Shanghai is number one for exhibitor and visitor quality. It is an international and professional exhibition where we can attract lots of overseas aftermarket clients.”
Mr Peter Zhou, Reporting Unit Manager China, GKN Land System-GKN Aftermarkets and Services said: “This is our first time to exhibit at Automechanika Shanghai. We want to promote our aftermarket service and products to potential customers. We think Automechanika Shanghai is a good chance for us. The products displayed are specifically customised for the China car market. We hope that our clients can personally experience the new products at our booth.”

Luoshi Group Corporation from China has been exhibiting at the show for nine years. Mr Jeffrey Ma, Assistant to the Business President said: “At the show we can promote our brand image, expand our customer group, find new opportunities and maintain relationships with old customers. The show is also an important way for us to learn about the newest trends of the industry. We met more than 30 groups of overseas customers every day and many more domestic customers.”

Other Parts & Components exhibitors included Affinia, BorgWarner, China Changan, Continental Automotive, ContiTech, Cummins, Dayco, Delphi, Febi Bilsten, Federal Mogul, GJN, Gonowpower, Great Wall, Hella, Mahle, MANN+HUMMEL, Meiji Sangyo, Meritor, NAVECO, NTN-SNR, Raybestos, Ruili, Schaeffler, Totoya Tsusho, TRW, Unipoint, Valeo, Wanxiang, and ZF.

Exhibitors representing the Repair & Maintenance sector included Maha Maschinenbau (Beijing) Trading Co Ltd and BZI Electrical Equipment Co Ltd.

Long term exhibitor Maha Maschinenbau also exhibits at Automechanika in Frankfurt. Mr Xiu Chunlin, the company’s General Manager said: “The number of exhibitors at Automechanika Shanghai is increasing every year. Each year we see the user’s professional level improving and can also feel China’s industrial level rising. We hope that through Automechanika Shanghai, we can
introduce an advanced German detection technique to China, and let Chinese users enjoy the benefits of international testing technology.”

French company BZI Electrical Equipment Co Ltd has been in the Chinese market for 10 years but was making its first appearance at the show. The company manufactures industrial welding, body repair, and battery maintenance products. Mr Michael Zhao, the company’s General Manager remarked: “Because of the many foreign exhibitors, which attracted a lot of domestic customers, we think the show is a good publicity platform for the company. We are satisfied with the number of visitors and have access to new domestic buyers.”

Other Repair & Maintenance exhibitors included Aoli, ApolloSpray, Autoboss, Autologic, Bantam, Beissbarth, Berton, Bosch, Cartool, Corghi, CTEK, Giuliano, Guangli, GYS, Hennessy, JBT, Jonnesway, Launch, Lincoln Industrial, Midtronics, Panasonic, PCL, Stanley, TACTIX, Tech, Triens, WashTec, and Zonyi.

Exhibitors representing the Accessories and Tuning sectors included Shanghai Hangsheng Industry Co Ltd, Osram China Lighting Ltd and Carlas International Auto Accessories Co Ltd. Mr Yin Zhanwei, General Manager of Shanghai Hangsheng Industry Co Ltd commented: “It is our first time to exhibit at Automechanika Shanghai, which is China’s largest trade show of its kind with the highest number of visitors, the most influential, and the most international exhibition. As the leading Chinese enterprise, Hangsheng must participate in Automechanika Shanghai.”

Making its second appearance at the show was Osram China Lighting Ltd. They were showcasing their new auto LED lighting.
Mr Jason AI, Chief Executive Officer of Osram China Lighting Ltd said: “There is no doubt that Automechanika Shanghai is a good communication platform for professional customers and dealers. Through participating at the show, we have more opportunities to interact with our partners, customers, dealers and car manufacturers, as well as promoting our latest products and technologies to them.”

Fourth time exhibitor Carlas International Auto Accessories Co Ltd from China was attending the show to boost brand awareness and launch new products. Mr Liu Wanzhong, General Manager, Carlas International Auto Accessories Co Ltd said: “Automechanika Shanghai is an excellent marketing and networking platform and can bring us global information. By actively participating in several series of demonstrations and competitions at the highlighted outdoor event of the Shanghai International Automotive Carnival 2012, it successfully brings us professional customers.”

Other Accessories & Tuning exhibitors included AOFU, Autodoc, Botny, Czech Steam, Formula 1, Henkel, ITW, Luo’s Oil, Odis, Oulv, Meguiar’s, Run Baojie, Shutan, Spacekey, Steelmate, SVAUTO, Tianhong, TJM, Zhumei, V-Kool, WD-40, Winbo and Yunhan.

Visitors impressed by high quality exhibitors, show management and scale

Among the show’s thousands of visitors was a delegation organised by the China Automotive Maintenance and Repair Trade Association. Mr Wang Fengling, Vice Secretary-General of the association commented: “Considering scale, organisation and management, I can see the professionalism of the show organiser. Social events, forums and presentations during the show period are quite good and play an active role in driving the industry development.”

First time international visitor Mr Alberto Lacombe, Diretor Técnico e Comercial, TLX Autoparts, Brazil commented: “I want to meet new suppliers and also to discover new companies which are not trading in Brazil. I have achieved these goals. I have found some new suppliers and I’m trying to visit the factories after the show. The show is very well organised and access is good by subway and shuttle bus.”

Visitor Mr Gideon Segal, Business Development Manager, Group, Australian Truck and Auto Parts, Australia remarked: “Instead of having to go all over the countryside to visit our distributors, we can see everybody in one place at one time. Shows like Automechanika Shanghai are good for that purpose. This year’s show is bigger and more international.”

Mr Li Mingcheng, a committee member of magazine MotorChina added: “We are happy to see that there are many exhibitors giving weight to onsite equipment and technology demonstrations which allow visitors to gain a better understanding of their products in an easy and effective way. Also the show covers the whole spectrum of the industry and allows visitors to find tools, equipment and technologies that best suit their companies, as well as keeping pace with the latest industry development trends.”

Highest number of pavilions at the show

Automechanika Shanghai 2012 hosted 13 pavilions which set a show record. Countries and regions represented were France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and USA. Local pavilions were supported by more than 50 trade organisations and industry associations.

The Malaysian Pavilion was making its fourth appearance at the show and featured eight Malaysia rubber part companies. Pavilion organiser, Mr Sam Goh Hun Seng, Chief Representative, Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council China Representative Office said: “Automechanika Shanghai reflects the present situation of China’s auto industry and this is the reason why we consider it is the number one auto parts exhibition in China. Automechanika Shanghai always attracts China’s largest car dealers and vehicle factories and is an exhibition that we must participate in.”

In addition to the international and regional pavilions, there were zones for remanufacturing and new energy. One of the remanufacturing exhibitors was Beijing Dong Tian Auto Parts Co Ltd from China. Company President Mr Jing Dongning remarked: “The special Remanufacturing Zone builds up a very good platform for specialists in this certain industry section to communicate and exchange market information, set up business opportunities. We hope that through the marketing channels of the exhibition, more people will truly accept the concept of re-manufactured products, recognise the quality and finally realise energy-efficiency.”

Representing the new energy zone was first time German exhibitor, German Federal Association for eMobility (BEM). Mr Christian Heep, the association’s director said: “We gained internationality and contacts by being at the show and new ideas as well as making good things for new mobility in China. I think there is a very high potential for Chinese industries to build up a very great new e-mobility market.”

Largest ever fringe programme line up

The 2012 show featured a record 30 fringe programmes covering the sectors of Parts & Components, Repair & Maintenance, Accessories & Tuning, and Remanufacturing & New Energy. Highlighted programmes included:

• Automotive Aftermarket Summit 2012 – Innovation and Adjustment of the Service Mode
• New Energy Vehicles & Green Maintenance – Opportunities and Challenges for Automobile Repair and Maintenance Industry
• Shanghai International Automotive Carnival 2012
• Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA) International Remanufacturing Forum, and
• Automechanika Matchmaking Forum

The first ever NextGen Auto International Summit China was co-organised by Messe Frankfurt and the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission’s International Cooperation Centre (NDEC’s ICC).

Attendee Mr Rizal Nainy, Associate Director, NKEA, Electrical & Electronic / Innovation PEMANDU said: “All of the topics were well-presented and the speakers were very knowledgeable. I was impressed by the topics related to the EV directions as well as the batteries recharging locations. We need more events like this summit to share and exchange ideas as an industry in order to grow and make our businesses successful.”

In addition some of the fringe programme seminar sessions were organised by exhibitors Carlas, Delphi, MAHLE, Schaeffler, Spacekey and ZF.

Mr Wu Hai, Chief Executive Officer of Spacekey said: “To organise such a forum is very important for us to attract target clients to make their product sourcing. As the show is growing larger with more importance to the whole industry, it attracts a bigger visitor group from 4S store section.”

The next edition of Automechanika Shanghai 2013 will take place from 10 – 13 December 2013 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre, China.
