Castrol Professional Becomes First Carbon-Neutral Engine Oil

Castrol Professional products become world’s first certified carbon dioxide (CO₂) neutral engine oils.

Castrol Professional products have become the first CO₂-neutral engine oils in Europe by successfully meeting strict international environmental standards.

EDGE Professional, MAGNATEC Professional and GTX Professional have all been certified CO₂-neutral by BSI PAS2060, the global standard with the toughest demands for measuring and managing the C02 footprint of a product’s life cycle.

John Ward-Zinski, Global Brand Director for Castrol Professional, says: “Tackling CO₂ emissions is a major issue for the automotive industry globally and Castrol Professional has made this a central part of our working relationship with manufacturers and dealers, as we develop ever-more sophisticated engine oil formulations. This is a practical step towards a longer commitment to innovate sustainably through continued technological and scientific advancement.”

In 2014, 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ are likely to be neutralised globally by Castrol Professional. This figure is expected to grow to nearly half a million tonnes annually the following year.

Long-term commitment

Castrol is committed to an approach of both reducing and neutralising CO₂, and is continuously looking at ways to reduce its CO₂ impact through its oil development. As a next step, Castrol has committed to neutralising the remaining CO₂ of its Professional products, based on feedback from over a thousand franchised car dealerships globally.

Castrol will neutralise the CO₂ produced throughout the entire production process by investing in a portfolio of emission reduction projects such as reforestation in Kenya, clean electricity generation in China and wind farms in New Caledonia.

John Ward-Zinski, says: “Castrol Professional is committed to achieving carbon neutrality using a globally endorsed and accredited approach, and we are firmly on the path to long-term sustainability. We underpin our CO₂ neutral claims with good science including reduction in the manufacturing process and offsetting the remaining CO₂. Castrol Professional will continue to analyse the whole of the product lifecycle, from cradle to grave, to determine how to neutralise CO₂ emissions today and for the future.”

Notes

The standard for neutralising emissions is BSI PAS2060, the latest and most comprehensive certification for CO₂-neutrality that is already well established across a wide variety of products. It is recognised by sustainability and climate change experts as best in class and meets the challenging requirements of the global Greenhouse Gas Protocol. This method of CO₂ footprinting is endorsed by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

The product lifecycle analysis, which calculated the amount of CO₂ that needed to be neutralised for the cradle to grave life of the product was independently verified by internationally recognised third party specialising in sustainability auditing.
