Frost & Sullivan Product Leadership Award Conferred on Sentient for its Pioneering Steering Software

Hardware independence is key to product's success

Based on its recent analysis of the automotive steering software market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Sentient with the 2014 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Leadership. Sentient’s robust steering software–S+ Premium Steering–stands apart from the competition as it caters to different steering systems, hardware and system integrators, which means that it can be used in practically any vehicle.

“The hardware-independent nature of the steering software, along with its ability to reduce and even eliminate disturbances related to steering, diminish wear-and-tear coefficients, and provide a consistent steering feel, distinguish it from others in the market,” said Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Arunprasad Nandakumar. “The software’s capability to improve course stability for more relaxed driving and its in-built pull drift compensation technology, which helps deal with side-wind and other real-world scenarios, are among the other prominent features that strengthen its value proposition.”

The innovative methods and principles behind the development and functioning of the S+ Premium Steering solution contribute to its success. The solution is based on a patented driver torque principle, which not only ensures sufficient control of the vehicle through steering assist, but also manipulates an inverse boost curve under certain conditions to provide a fail-safe operation.

Further, the solution conducts four types of dedicated tests to fabricate a set of physical model parameters and follows a tuning guideline that generates 28 tuning parameters. When these parameters are fed into the model’s functional component, it generates the intended driving behavior. This entire process allows both premium and generalist original equipment manufacturers to maintain the same steering feel across different vehicle lines with different steering actuators.

“Not surprisingly, the software is expected to be employed in multiple passenger and commercial vehicles across Europe,” stated Nandakumar. “Frost & Sullivan expects as many as 1 million vehicles to incorporate Sentient’s automotive steering software by 2020.”

Based on these factors, Frost & Sullivan is proud to present Sentient with the 2014 European Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Leadership. Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has developed an innovative element in its product that enhances features and functionalities, while offering higher value to the customers. The award recognizes the quality of the product and its acceptance in the marketplace.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.

About Sentient

Sentient is a Gothenburg based software company, focusing on steering systems software for the automotive industry. In 2013, Sentient’s Driver Torque Principle was introduced in the serial production of heavy trucks of a global market leading company.

Sentient’s steering control software creates a premium steering feel, a safer working environment and reduces risks for wear and tear injuries among drivers. It reflects Sentient’s commitment to active road safety, where a series of coming products are being developed, primarily for cars and trucks.

Sentient’s vision is to save lives by the use of technology, which helps drivers cope better in dangerous situations and in the end eliminating fatal and serious accidents. The Sentient mission is to develop software products that can be implemented in steering and other electronic systems in vehicles, and contribute to a safer and more comfortable driving experience.

Working with Sentient means building a close relationship over an extended period of time. The business model includes demonstrations of prototypes, followed by tuning to meet customer requirements and integration into a target platform. Software licensing, support and updates are offered on a continuous basis during the life-cycle of the platform.

Based at Lindholmen in Gothenburg, Sweden, next door to a wide range of research institutes and companies in related sectors Sentient is firmly based in science and technology; founders Jochen Pohl and Johan Hultén are both engineers and researchers who turned entrepreneurs.
