Alcantara Lights Up This Year's Shanghai Auto Show

by Jon Knox

An impressive number of new cars and SUVs hit the floor of the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show (April 21 - 28) featuring interiors with Alcantara®, the Made in Italy luxury material.

Audi, Alfa Romeo, BMW, Buick, Ferrari, Maserati, Maxus, Porsche, Roewe, Skoda and Volkswagen all displayed vehicles equipped with Alcantara material.

Buick's Encore SUV featured Morello red Alcantara seating with contrasting black leather. The Buick Verano GS was fitted with seats in a black Alcantara with red stitching, while the Verano 2.0T was equipped with Alcantara in beige. Other Buick models also featured Alcantara treatments, including several versions of the Regal.

Roewe, a SAIC brand, showcased the carbon-neutral Italian material on its hybrid SUV E-RX5 and EI6. Their Alcantara seats were light grey -- a tailor-made colour developed specifically for Roewe. The door panels of Roewe's Vision E show car also were dressed in Alcantara.

Maxus, another SAIC brand, also had the door panels and seating of its D90 sport vehicle outfitted in black Alcantara.

FAW–Volkswagen's Bora Sportline showcased black and grey Alcantara seating. The Sagitar R-Line had seating with a grey-Alcantara and black-leather combination with contrasting grey stitching. In addition, the I.D. Crozz concept car had its steering wheel wrapped in grey Alcantara.

BMW added Alcantara flair to many of its vehicle interiors, including in wide range of headliners, pillars, dashboards and seats.

Audi also showcased a variety of vehicles in Shanghai fitted out with Alcantara headliners, seats, steering wheels and door panels.

Pininfarina presented an entire range of environmentally friendly vehicles developed for the Hybrid Kinetic Group, including the world premiere for the five-seater SUV K550 with an Alcantara headliner and the Asian debut of the H600 luxury sedan with charcoal-grey Alcantara.

The seven-seater SUV K750 had dark brown Alcantara with yellow stitching on its dashboard, backseats and steering wheel.

Alfa Romeo entered the Chinese market at the Shanghai Auto Show with its Giulia Quadrifoglio enriched with black Alcantara seating. Other car makers with vehicles equipped in Alcantara trim included Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari and Skoda.
