Recent global malware attacks which have affected what were previously believed to be secure networks have raised awareness of the automotive industry of the threat to increasingly connected vehicles.
One of the leaders in managing the threat is HARMAN, which has introduced the industry’s first comprehensive multi-layer security framework for in-car technology design. HARMAN is a member of the Automotive Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Auto-ISAC), a coordinated auto industry effort to establish a platform for sharing, tracking and analyzing intelligence about cyber threats and potential vulnerabilities, as well as defining standards and best practices for cyber security solutions.
Automotive Industries (AI) asked Dvir Reznik – Senior Marketing Manager Automotive Cyber Security at HARMAN what cyber security solutions the company is offering to the automotive Industry.
Reznik: We are offering an end-to-end visibility, detection and prevention system for car manufacturers and fleets. We’re building on our award-winning Intrusion Detection and Prevention solution by offering a backend component which receives in-vehicle security events, being used for further analysis. Take for example the traditional IT world: a security analyst knows which devices are connected to the Internet, from where, for how long, at which intervals, and many other parameters. So when a potential threat is identified, the analyst can trace back the source and recommend on a resolution to mitigate the threat and prevent other devices from being affected. The same applies to our industry.
AI: Has the purchase of TowerSec in January 2016 by HARMAN sped up the rollout of the technology?
Reznik: The acquisition by HARMAN 15 months ago did help in some aspects of the business, but this direction was already on our roadmap so it is good to see how the market has responded to it. We have ongoing engagements with major OEMs in the US, Europe and Japan.
AI: How do you work with the carmakers?
Reznik: As HARMAN’s Automotive Cyber Security Business Unit we bring extensive experience in traditional IT security, embedded security as well as pioneering work in automotive cyber security. We are working with HARMAN’s account managers to understand the manufacturers’ plans and security requirements, so we can offer the best solution from our portfolio.
AI: Is your approach any different to that of other cybersecurity companies?
Reznik: Even before the Samsung acquisition, HARMAN was an innovative and global provider to the automotive industry, with an array of solutions. We work alongside the OEMs in organizations such as Auto-ISAC, SAE International and ISO to define and deploy cyber security best practices and standards. HARMAN Automotive Cyber Security solutions are recognized around the world for their unique capabilities in keeping the connected cars protected against cyber threats and we are obviously working closely with HARMAN Ignite Platform and Over-The-Air solutions, to keep the software up-to-date as well.
AI: How often could these updates be done?
Reznik: It depends on the manufacturer’s policy. At times, it would require an immediate update, while for less critical updates the OEM can elect when to install the update.
AI: What about autonomous driving?
Reznik: The entire automotive industry is going through some very interesting changes. Connected cars open up many new opportunities in the industry, specifically around customization, enhanced connectivity, entertainment features, ADAS and software management, productivity applications and more. Autonomous and even semi-autonomous (Level 3/4) will not only expand those, but also present new challenges.
AI: Where are the opportunities?
Reznik: I think there are a lot of opportunities for the industry as a whole in the coming 12 – 18 months. Take the data coming from vehicles as an example. Having all this information opens up new business models and potential revenue streams, not to mention new channels to communicate with consumers . Protection of data privacy will be key here, which is one of the topics being discussed at the Auto-ISAC organization, by the car manufacturers and Tier 1 companies like HARMAN, to identify the right balance between consumers’ demand for new services and protection of privacy.
AI asked Marc Marlatt – Sr Vice President and General Manager Automotive Audio Business Unit Lifestyle Audio, what market the unit is catering for.
Marlatt: We are developing car audio solutions for the entire line-up of vehicles from A segment all the way to the ultra-luxury segment. The Summit platform is targeting the very high end. What we are also trying to do is go beyond just pure sound. We benchmarked over a thousand vehicles, and our sound performance is always at the top. So we know we can deliver very best sound, and now we are trying to deliver features. Summit is a system-on-chip (SoC) solution, which provides so much processing power that we can introduce additional features. Here we are taking it to the next level, that’s why we are calling it Summit Next. At CES 2016 we introduced Individual Sound Zones for each passenger and QuantumLogic Immersion. With a spin of the control wheel you can change your surround sound. Summit Next is also designed for autonomous driving. It will allow services such as in-car theatre, where you will be able to experience a movie with the full surround sound as if you were in a theater. Our in-car video conferencing feature goes well beyond the often patchy and hard-to-understand video conferencing that can be done via a smartphone in a moving car today. With Summit Next it is possible to spatially render audio and thus to differentiate the faces and voices of the participants in the conference.
AI: What about the entry level?
Marlatt: Voyager Next offers a different architectural way to approach A, B and C-segment cars. Traditionally you have speaker in the door, along with all the wiring associated with it. This is a lot of infrastructure for low-cost audio. Our new KiNETiC speaker gives OEMs packaging flexibility. In the Voyager Next instrument panel, we have the head unit audio display surrounded by a 13 micro speaker array. When you combine that type of speaker with ESP algorithms to process the sound you can get the full range experience without having speakers in the door. In addition, we can place a Bluetooth micro-speaker in the trunk providing the bass and sub-woofer frequencies. So you get your full capability high and mid frequencies through the instrument panel at the front and get your bass out of the trunk. When you turn your car off you just pull the speaker out and take it onto the beach or into your house or office.
