Modern Engineering Opens New Facility in Saint-Etienne, France

Kimberly Elsham :
The Modern Engineering group, an outsourced industrial engineering company headquartered in Rochester Hills, Mich., announced the opening of a new facility in France during a press luncheon held on April 17 in Detroit, Mich. Already present in China, India, Israel, and Romania, the group’s new facility in the Metrotech technology park near the city of Saint-Etienne in central France marks its first development project in western Europe.

Founded in 1946, Modern Engineering provides key engineering functions to companies in aerospace, agricultural, automotive, and heavy industrial sectors. Initially specialized for the automotive industry, the group diversified in 2003 to support all types of rolling stock. It currently employs 1100 people and provides its customers with a complete, integrated service to satisfy outsourced engineering needs.

The group’s expansion, which began in January, includes a new engineering center and will create 160 new engineering positions, at rate of about 50 to 60 jobs each year, in manufacturing, product development, and supply-chain engineering. These cross-functional positions will be applicable to many vertical segments.

Belgium and Germany were also candidates for the new facility, but France was chosen for the project for several reasons. Modern Engineering’s CEO, Ron Wood, cites the quality of the region’s engineering schools and the presence of several regional and national industry clusters as the deciding factors. The group worked with French government ministers, the Invest in France Agency, ERAI (the Rhône-Alpes region’s economic development agency), Expansion 42 (the Loire area’s economic development agency), and the Saint-Etienne Métropole industrial cluster.

In November 2006, Modern Engineering was acquired by the Geometric software Solutions, a specialist in providing PLM and engineering solutions to the global mechanical design, manufacturing, and industrial enterprises. This Mumbai, India-based company, with more than two decades of experience in the PLM domain, has a worldwide presence and focuses its software and solutions in the aerospace, automotive, and heavy industrial engineering sectors.
