At BBS the new year starts with the same speed as the last one finished with: After the motorsports successes of 2009 like the Formula One championship and over 30 victories in long distance races the first three cars of the Dakar Rallye crossed the finish line on BBS wheels at the beginning of 2010. The Race Touaregs triple victory showcased for Volkswagen still another achievement topping the double victory of the last term. In early 2009 the Wolfsburg team finished first and second. As well on BBS.
The Dakar is regarded the hardest race in the world. Already on Saturday before the last contest there were 307 of the 450 spare tyres in the Volkswagen camp worn. Tyre damage was by far the most frequent damage category at all. Several times there were high speed collisions with rocks or trunks lying around. An extraordinary durability test for the wheels of BBS. A single production flaw could have cost the teams victory.
Yet the motorsports commitment seems to pay off for the wheel manufacturer. Regular successes like the Formula One or Dakar wins result in high brand awareness. “Our motorsports competence strengthens the brand especially in the after market. This is proven, among others, by the renowned best brand award we won 2009 from an important German special interest magazine for the fourth year in a row. This never happened to them before,” explains BBS CEO Norbert Zumblick. “But in 2009 we were also surprised by a new customer award of a big web portal site for cars. It was presented to us on the Essen Motor Show. Our wheels were again mounted there on dozens of show cars. As well as on the IAA. We didn´t need a booth of our own at all. That shows how center stage and lively the brand is everywhere. And how strongly it evolves.”
Obviously this is also true for the car manufacturing community and its hard supplier business. Against the backdrop of the victorious Race Touaregs it is hardly astonishing, that BBS supplies also the new VW Touareg. The road version shines on ceramic polished and weight optimized BBS wheels with a rather distinguishing gloss. “In 2009 we have advanced ceramic polishing from niche applications like the Bugatti Veyron and made it ready for series production. The polishing is admittedly very time consuming, but we eliminate the use of chrome coating. This saves weight and is environmentally friendly. A sustainable innovation indeed,” says Zumblick. “This high end surface finishing is now also applied at the wheels of the new Bentley nameplates.”
The other new references of BBS in the automotive manufacturing business also fit into the motorsports context: New super sportscars like the SLS AMG gullwing or Ferrari 458 Italia, but also the new Porsche Panamera. Erich Gissler, chief of BBS motorsports, offers a wrap up: “In the year 2009 where we celebrated our 30th anniversary of the first overall victory for BBS wheels in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Peugeot won the latest edition of the worlds most famous endurance race. Again on BBS. Next to the overall victory and all the pole positions in LMP1, we also won the LMP2 (on Porsche), GT1 (on Corvette) and GT2 (on Ferrari) classes with pole positions in these classes, too. Just for the record: BBS wheels were on all the cars that won the most important endurance races last year: the 24 Hours of Daytona, 24 Hours of the Nürburgring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Well, it couldn't have been better than this.“
After the 30 year Le-Mans-anniversary in 2009 BBS prepares now in 2010 for the 40 year company-anniversary. “We want to celebrate this right away in this spring with our customers in the after market with a set of special offers,” announces Zumblick. “A totally new line of wheels belongs also to this.
