PROTECTION OF IP RIGHTS IN CHINA Manufacturing is becoming more concentrated in China, and so too has IP rights infringement. According to the U.S. government, U.S. companies lose over one billion dollars each year to piracy alone. Other forms of IP infringement, such as the illegal inclusion of U.S. proprietary technology in Chinese goods, are equally, if not more damaging. Therefore, IP protection is pivotal to successfully doing business in China.

PP INTAKE MANIFOLD REDUCES COST AND WEIGHT BY 15% With intake manifolds made of polypropylene, Röchling Automotive has set new benchmarks in terms of cost, weight and acoustics. These three criteria have improved due to the lower density of polypropylene compared with polyamide, the material currently most widely used for intake manifolds. At the same time, PP offers sufficient sturdiness. Two reference engines by VW are the one-litre three-cylinder petrol engine in Brazil and Europe and the 1.6 litre four-cylinder petrol engine in China.

Röchling coolant expansion container for GM fuel cell car Röchling Automotive supplies from its South Tirol plant fuel cell cars all over the world with expansion containers. Here the separation of gases and fluids as well as the management of bursting pressure require new measurements. Other specification criteria are met with state of the art container construction. The containers represent real high tech products with multi chamber system, several safety valves and safety caps as well as a ion filter. The fuel cell principle depends on a coolant without any conductivity. Therefore the ions must be filtered out of the fluid. The container is a system relevant component for flawless operation of a fuel cell. Thus the electric level indicator must not be disturbed by electromagnetic fields. Comparable specifications also apply for pure battery electric cars.

Jyco Sealing Technologies has named Jin Kameyama as Executive Account Manager, Japanese OEMs for its North American operations. Kameyama joins Jyco after 27 years with Mitsubishi, where he was testing manager and, most recently, Mitsubishi´s Senior Manager of Testing at Mitsubishi Motors R&D of America, Inc. (MRDA), Ann Arbor. Kameyama´s hire is part of the Michigan-based company´s strategy to position its North American operations to do more automotive weathersealing business directly with Japanese transplants in the U.S. Jyco has been supplying compound as a tier two supplier to Japanese OEMs in North America for several years. The company´s Jyco Asia affiliate also has overseas production contracts with Asian OEMs through an engineering center in Nogoya, Japan, and a manufacturing plant in Shanghai. Announced in January 2005, the Jyco Asia joint venture with Inoac Corporation was automotive industry´s first global alliance for producing TPV sealing systems. Jyco also has operations in Belgium, Canada, and Latin America. “It is exciting to join the company that´s leading the shift to TPV in North America,” comments Kameyama. “The clean processing and 100% recyclability of JyFlex TPV (the company´s proprietary thermoplastic vulcanizate compound) already meet Japan´s and Europe´s stricter environmental standards. The added benefits in performance, lighter weight and potential cost advantages make it very attractive to all OEMs.” For more information contact: James Mong Jyco Sealing Technologies, Dexter, MI 734-277-6989 jimmong@jyco.net or Jin Kameyama Jyco Sealing Technologies Sherbrooke, Quebec 819-562-4440 Ext.238 E-mail: jinkameyama@jyco.net

Burning Fuel and Holes in Your Wallet: A Consumer´s Guide to Variable Fuel Costs Authors: Emily Claeys Materials Engineer, DaimlerChrysler Corporation Andrew Stolen Product Engineer, Peiker Acoustic Abstract Increasing fuel costs is, without a doubt, a key frustration for those who drive automobiles on a daily basis. Moreover, owners of vehicles with low fuel efficiency suffer the greatest impact. Recent surveys suggest rising gas prices are a major factor in car-buying decisions. This has become reality for the Full-Size SUV market, where sales have declined 14% from February 2005 to February 2006. Although automakers have recognized an increase in sales for a certain truck and SUV models, the overall market decline has led to the introduction of a variety of hybrid gas/electric vehicles. While hybrid gas/electric vehicles have higher fuel efficiency, other costs must be considered. Additionally, some automakers have introduced marketing campaigns for flex-fuel vehicles, or those with the ability to run on ethanol based fuel. As global oil demand increases and political turmoil continues, fuel economy will remain a major issue to consumers and force important vehicle decisions going forward.
