First Time Ever Use of Artificial Intelligence Now Available on Apple iPhone GPS Application

Once the Domain of Robots and Science-Fiction Movies, Artificial Intelligence Now Reflects User's Specific Local Knowledge

Artificial intelligence, once the domain of robots and science-fiction movies, is — for the first time ever — available as a feature on an Apple iPhone GPS application. G-Map, a navigation application for the iPhone from XRoad, uses artificial intelligence (A.I.) to learn the user’s route preferences and reflects that specific local knowledge in future routing. Want to avoid a particularly icy stretch of road in the winter? Prefer to steer clear of a street with impossibly narrow lanes? G-Map delivers, and makes it easy for users to add their preferences to route guidance.

HOW IT WORKS

If the G-Map user chooses to drive a different route than G-Map’s suggested fastest routing, the system recalculates the route and guides the user again. However, if the user continues to avoid the original route that G-Map recommended, G-Map’s A.I. technology recognizes that the new route is user’s preferred route, and adopts that preferred route in the future.

“Everyone who has used a GPS knows that sometimes, the ‘fastest’ or ‘shortest’ route proposed by a navigation system is not always the best route for that individual,” explains Sean Lee, Marketing Director of XRoad, whose G-Map was the first GPS software for the iPhone with turn-by-turn directions. “G-Map is able to respond to this widespread consumer demand, because XRoad invented the A.I. algorithm that applies to route calculation and user preferred route guidance,” Lee states.

G-MAP’S LEGACY OF LOCATION-BASED GUIDANCE EXCELLENCE

XRoad is a leading brand of location-based guidance products and mobile navigation software and devices. It established key software components for Korea Telecom, Samsung and LG mobile phones and participated in the telematics development with Hyundai for the Genesis, which was named 2009 North American Car of the Year. Its A.I. technology for G-Map is a hybrid of navigation and mobile technology and the result of eight years of research into user-optimized routing.

HOW IT IS UNIQUE

The fundamental difference between G-Map’s A.I. feature and TomTom’s IQ feature is that G-Map learns individual users’ preferred routing and incorporates it into future routing, while the TomTom reflects multiple users’ experience of local traffic conditions and applies it to the routing. G-Map learns the specific preferences of its user and personalizes future routing for that individual, not to choices made by the masses.
