QNX Extends Its Lead in Automotive Infotainment Market

QNX software platform now licensed for more than 17 million in-vehicle systems, more than double the amount in 2008.

Reconfirming its position as the leading provider of operating systems and middleware for the automotive infotainment market, QNX Software Systems today announced that its technology has been licensed for more than 17 million in-vehicle systems worldwide — an increase of 130 percent since 2008.

Today, more than 200 vehicle models ship with QNX-based infotainment and telematics systems. Brands such as Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, GMC, Infiniti, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen now use QNX® technology as the software foundation for their digital instrument clusters, handsfree systems, multimedia head units, connectivity modules, 3D navigation systems, or rear-seat entertainment products.

To achieve its dramatic growth in the automotive market, QNX Software Systems has implemented a multi-pronged strategy that blends production-proven software, a broad partner ecosystem, and a professional services group dedicated to helping customers reduce Bill of Material costs and meet or exceed start-of-production (SOP) commitments.

These initiatives include the QNX CAR application platform, which accelerates time-to-market through pre-integrated reference implementations and an innovative business model. Launched in 2009, the platform has attracted more than 60 industry participants, including 17 automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and 26 automotive suppliers.

The QNX CAR application platform is already being used in automotive production programs for 2011 model year vehicles. It also provides the software foundation for the LTE Connected Car from ng Connect, a concept vehicle that demonstrates how Long Term Evolution (LTE) 4G networks will bring cloud-based navigation and speech recognition, video-on-demand, Internet radio, and other wireless broadband services to the automobile.

“Infotainment has become the prime market differentiator in the automotive industry, and QNX has fine-tuned its software platform, its business model, and its professional services to help automotive customers deliver infotainment systems with the least risk, least cost, and in the least time possible,” said Andrew Poliak, director of automotive business development at QNX Software Systems. “We do the heavy lifting so that our customers can create systems that are innovative and distinctive, yet on time and on budget.”
