The answer for large gap steel-to-steel brazing

Luvata, in partnership with Ultra Infiltrant, introduces UltraBrazeTM, a patented brazing wire that delivers superior joint strength, wetting and filling characteristics compared with CDA 102 or 110 alloys. UltraBraze is specifically designed for furnace brazing large gaps or press fit joints of the same material such as carbon-to-carbon or steel-to-steel.

Using UltraBraze, instead of traditional CDA 102 and 110 alloys, delivers consistent, predictable brazing results with a single pass, eliminating the need for flux or binder along with the costs associated with rework and defects. In loose fit testing, as gaps increased the shear strength of UltraBraze increased greater than 50%.

Ideally suited for brazing various stampings, castings, machine screw and other piece part operations, UltraBraze applications include aircraft, lawn and garden and automotive, such as torque converters, muffler hanger brackets and fuel rails. Consisting of 4.5% zinc, 2% iron and copper, UltraBraze is available in wire, ring and slug forms.

“Ensuring high-quality in large-gap brazing always presents its challenges,” indicates Jonathan Zimmerman, President, Rogers Metal Services. “We were ecstatic the first time we tried UltraBraze. Not only is the braze much stronger and more uniform in appearance, but we’ve been able to improve our throughput as well.”

“UltraBraze is a combination of our metallurgical expertise, wire and welding know-how that delivers advantages our customers appreciate,” indicates John Stevens, President Luvata Appleton. “Our partnership with Ultra Infiltrant, co-creating UltraBraze, is a great example of how Luvata is working to help our customers.”

Luvata Appleton is a fully-integrated producer of round, square and rectangular wire from 0.0006” to 1.000” available in over 60 copper alloys used for batteries, electrical power, renewable energy, aquaculture and welding.

Paul Rivest, CEO of Ultra Infiltrant commented: “UI is pleased to expand its relationship with Luvata to include UltraBraze in addition to Ultra Infiltrant, both manufactured by Luvata.”

Ultra Infiltrant is a wrought wire infiltration process in which high-specification copper alloys are melted into sintered simple wire forms that are easy to handle and use. These simple wire forms offer significant benefits over powder metal copper infiltrants including easier handling, less waste, increased productivity and strength.
