Altia Executive To Participate in AutomotiveUI 2009

Conference to Discuss Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications

Altia announces that Peter Abowd, its President of Worldwide Automotive, will serve on the program committee for the First International Conference on Automotive User Interfaces and Interactive Vehicular Applications (AutomotiveUI 2009). This conference will take place on the main campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen in Essen, Germany on September 21-22, 2009.

The conference will discuss the advances in technology that have turned automobiles into complex interactive systems and the interesting challenges that automotive embedded systems developers face when creating interfaces for drivers to interact with the wide array of new in-vehicle technologies. Altia is keenly interested in this dialogue because of the widespread use of its tools to design next generation automotive displays. Automotive interface developers must deliver access to an increasing number of systems – for information, entertainment and communication. Not only must these interfaces be well-planned and attractive, but they also need to be easy for drivers to use. The man-machine interface has become a key component in determining overall driver experience and a critical feature for success of a product. Altia strongly supports conferences such as this that put the user interface at the center of the automotive discussion.

Altia is proud to participate in this new and exciting dialogue about automotive user interface design. As an experienced designer of automotive communication and interaction systems, Peter Abowd will lend an informed and practiced perspective to the committee panel. Before assuming his role as Altia’s President of Worldwide Automotive, Mr. Abowd gained industry experience at both Visteon Corporation and Ford Motor Company. He served as Visteon’s Director of Embedded Software Development, overseeing the software development for all Audio/Infotainment, Driver Information and Climate Control products in North America and Europe. Mr. Abowd also developed Visteon’s Visualization and Simulation Laboratory for cross-disciplined development of Human Machine Interfaces utilizing model-based software engineering. He has been awarded three U.S. patents including U.S. Patent 7286975, which applies to a “method for developing embedded code for system simulations and for use in a HMI”.

About AutomotiveUI 2009…

The AutomotiveUI 2009 program committee, in cooperation with ACM SIGCHI, invites authors to submit original papers in the form of academic papers, design sketches, interaction concepts and industrial case studies relating to automotive interfaces and interactive applications used in vehicles. All submissions are due by June 2, 2009. Submissions will be selected by a peer-review process. Notifications will be made by July 7, 2009.
