Perceptrons ScanWorks xyz Enhances 3-Axis Machines With 3D Scanning

Perceptron, Inc., a leading provider of information-based process improvement solutions for non-contact measurement and inspection applications, announced the release of ScanWorks(R) xyz, a 3D scanning solution designed for retrofitting 3-axis machines.

ScanWorks(R) xyz features all of the components required to add non-contact scanning capability to 1-, 2- or 3-axis coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), computer numerical controls (CNCs) and layout machines. While the machine sweeps the sensor over the part, the sensor emits a laser line and captures a digital representation of the part at a rate of 23,000 points a second. Simultaneously, the machine and sensor’s x, y and z positions are tightly synchronized in proprietary software. The end result is a highly accurate cloud of points that can be used for reverse engineering, virtual assembly, engineering analysis, feature and surface inspection or rapid prototyping.

“ScanWorks(R) xyz offers substantial improvements in the way 1- to 3-axis machines are utilized. We believe it saves end users capital by expanding the usefulness of their existing equipment, and it drastically increases their throughput by scanning more parts in less time,” commented Mark Hoefing, Perceptron’s Senior Vice President – Industrial Business Unit.

The ability to scan with a 3-axis machine is not new technology, but the ability to cost effectively retrofit an existing machine with non-contact scanning is a breakthrough. Before ScanWorks(R) xyz, these machines would require an expensive overhaul to incorporate scanning technology. With the addition of a sensor, electrical interface, a few cables and software, the operator will have full scanning capability at a fraction of the cost of a complete upgrade.

Mr. Hoefing added, “We see thousands of CMMs in manufacturing facilities that are being underutilized because the quality control department cannot budget for an expensive upgrade or a new CMM with scanning capability. Most CMMs are structurally sound and viable movers for laser sensors. We introduced ScanWorks(R) xyz at our Value Added Reseller Conference in Thailand recently and received extremely positive feedback.”

Perceptron develops, produces, and sells non-contact measurement and inspection solutions for industrial and commercial applications. The products from the Company’s Industrial Business Unit (IBU) provide solutions for manufacturing process control as well as sensor and software technologies for non-contact measurement and inspection applications.
