WABCO Demonstrates Breakthrough Load Monitoring Technology for Trailers

WABCO, a global technology leader and tier-one supplier to the commercial vehicle industry, will demonstrate breakthrough technology in load monitoring for trailers at the 16th World Congress and Exhibition on Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (ITS) in Stockholm, Sweden, from September 22 to 24. ITS 2009 is one of the industry’s most important international events for showcasing innovations in safe transport systems.

WABCO’s new technology is part of the Truck Cargo Weight Control
(TCWC) project recently initiated by the Swedish government to help develop active road safety systems.

Together with Volvo, the Swedish Road Authority and the Swedish Fleet Organization, WABCO has developed an innovative solution for remote load monitoring in heavy trucks and trailers. With WABCO’s new Controller Area Network (CAN) Router technology, WABCO enables real-time monitoring of cargo weight in truck-trailer combinations with one or more trailers via remote mobile devices.

“WABCO is an ideal partner for Volvo in this challenging technical project given WABCO’s track record of breakthrough technologies for trailer systems,” said Carl Johan Almqvist, Volvo Trucks, Traffic and Product Safety Director. “With deep understanding of customer needs, WABCO demonstrates exceptional engineering capabilities, contributing significantly to our successful Truck Cargo Weight Control project.”

“We are proud to partner with Volvo, the Swedish Road Authority and the Swedish Fleet Organization, resulting in an advancement of commercial vehicle and road safety,” said Nick Rens, WABCO Vice President, Aftermarket and Trailer Systems. “Our demonstration at ITS 2009 showcases WABCO’s innovation for intelligent trailer systems among industry decision makers, public authorities, manufacturers and others who value increased efficiency and improved safety, particularly in view of greater demands on professional trailer transport.”

Enhanced performance of electronic braking systems (EBS) on trailers

Introduced in April 2009 for trailer customers worldwide, WABCO’s new Controller Area Network (CAN) Router and Repeater are the industry’s first application of high-speed data transmission using CAN in-vehicle communications to improve braking performance of trailers.

WABCO’s new CAN Router provides faster transmission of braking signals and other data such as information on cargo weight for truck-trailer combinations with two or more trailers equipped with EBS. WABCO’s new CAN Repeater enables faster electronic transmission of braking signals in extra long trailers that are used to transport over-sized cargo such as construction materials.

The new CAN Router and Repeater mark the latest innovations in WABCO’s industry-leading Trailer EBS series that was launched in 1998. As of 2008, WABCO has sold more than 843,000 trailer electronic braking systems worldwide.

WABCO Vehicle Control Systems (NYSE: WBC) is a leading supplier of safety and control systems for commercial vehicles. For over 140 years, WABCO has pioneered breakthrough electronic, mechanical and mechatronic technologies for braking, stability, and transmission automation systems supplied to the world’s leading commercial truck, trailer, and bus manufacturers. With sales of $2.6 billion in 2008, WABCO is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. For more information, visit www.wabco-auto.com
