Bostik has taken direct glazing to the next level of performance while lowering the cost

Bostik Earns Accolades from Frost & Sullivan for its Ingenuity in Combining Polyurethane Technology with Silanes to Create Exceptional Adhesives

Based on its recent analysis of the automotive direct glazing market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Bostik, Inc. with the 2014 North American Frost & Sullivan Award for Enabling Technology Leadership. Bostik’s commitment to innovation is exemplified by its silyl modified polymer (SMP)-adhesive technology, which offers superior elongation, torsional strength, temperature resistance, and adhesion to a diverse range of substrate materials in automotive glazing.

SMP adhesives are ideal not only for glass, frit, and polycarbonates substrates for glazing, but also for metal, paint, carbon fiber, and composites on the vehicle body. In many cases, manufacturers do not even require secondary fastening or clamping when assembling with Bostik’s SMP adhesives.

A number of Bostik’s SMP technology-based products offer excellent UV resistance, and most do not shrink, chalk, or crack over time. Furthermore, by eliminating the need for surface pretreatment or primers, Bostik’s SMP adhesives enable lower production time, costs, and environmental/volatile organic compound (VOC)-related issues. Additionally, they are easy to apply, with minimal surface or substrate preparation.

“Bostik’s adhesives and sealants under Simson(TM) and Bostik® brands combine two chemistries: the bonding performance of polyurethanes, and the cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness of silicones,” said Frost & Sullivan Principal Analyst Raghu Tantry. “These innovative adhesives are application-specific and are formulated for outstanding bond strength, durability, and elasticity over a wide range of temperatures and humidity ratios.”

Another significant innovation from Bostik is its silyl polyurethane sealant (SPS) polymer technology. This modified hybrid silane and polyurethane technology has resulted in a highly solvent-free and isocyanate-free sealant, customized for porous and nonporous surfaces, while presenting a high degree of non-yellowing (UV resistance).

The 70 series and 2000 series are fine examples of Bostik’s SMP-based adhesives. Bostik’s ISR 70-08/70-08A is a one-component adhesive with high tensile strength with better working time due to its abundant green strength. The product is equipped with a conic nozzle for narrow grooves or pre-cut V-notch nozzle. It is formulated specifically for primer-less windshield and glass bonding.

“The Simson brand of SMP adhesives and sealants are based on a single component system and are easy to apply, environmentally friendly, and more efficient because of reduced cost and time for surface or substrate preparation,” noted Tantry. “As further proof of its ability to innovate, Bostik introduced its Simson Dual SMP system, a two-component SMP technology that increases the processing speed of application and cure, and provides greater reliability and bond durability.”

Bostik’s product line addresses the entire chain of processes involved in the installation of auto glass at the OEM assembly level, as well as glass replacement at the aftermarket level. This provides OEM and aftermarket customers with a one-stop shop purchase experience. The company’s extensive product line has found application in markets such as automotive exterior, automotive interiors, utility specialty vehicles, truck cabs and trailers, buses and recreational vehicles, marine vessels, aerospace, and rail.

Bostik’s SMP adhesives are user-friendly; need minimal training for preparation, sanding and painting; and are non-gassing adhesives that withstand harsh environments without losing their bond strength or compromising safety standards and crashworthiness. Due to these obvious advantages, Bostik has a considerable edge over peers that manufacture conventional polyurethane-based adhesives.

Each year, Frost & Sullivan presents this award to a company that has developed a pioneering technology that not only enhances current products, but also enables the development of newer products and applications. The award recognizes the high market acceptance potential of the recipient’s technology.

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service and strategic product development. Industry analysts compare market participants and measure performance through in-depth interviews, analysis and extensive secondary research to identify best practices in the industry.
