FEV Motorentechnik GmbH Becomes FEV GmbH

Name change reflects expanded scope of services, global reach

FEV Motorentechnik GmbH (FEV) announced that it has officially changed the name of the company to FEV GmbH. According to President and CEO Prof. Stefan Pischinger, who made the announcement, the name change reflects FEV’s growth into a worldwide organization, and its expansion of services beyond strictly engine development. The new name also positions the FEV brand for future market growth both within the automotive community and in non-automotive markets.

“We are tremendously proud of our history as a pre-eminent engine developer,” said Prof. Pischinger, “In recent years, we have expanded the spectrum of capabilities that are offered by FEV Motorentechnik GmbH well beyond the boundaries of only engine technology. Today, vehicle integration, transmission, chassis, electronics and electrical drives also belong to our core competencies. In addition to vehicle technology and drive system technology, we are also asked by our customers to deliver engineering services in the fields of energy technology and wind power. So our fields of expertise are much broader, than the name ‘FEV Motorentechnik GmbH’ suggests.”

The company’s continued international expansion, coupled with its multi-disciplinary expertise was also a factor in the decision to change its name will better represent our expanded presence and capabilities.

Founded in 1978 as a privately held company by Prof. Franz Pischinger who, at the time, headed the Institute for Applied Thermodynamics at the Technical University of Aachen, FEV has grown into an internationally-recognized leader in the design and development of internal combustion engines, conventional, electric, and alternative vehicle drive systems, energy technology, and a major supplier of advanced testing and instrumentation products and services to some of the world’s largest powertrain OEMs.

In 1985, FEV expanded its business into North America, initially in California, and then relocating in 1987 to suburban Detroit, Mich., where its world-class technical center, constructed in 1997, is located.

After significant growth and expansion in Europe and the U.S., FEV entered the Chinese market with the establishment of an office in Beijing, China in 1998.

Entering the new millennium, with its Asian business growing rapidly, FEV established a technical center in Dalian, China, providing the company with a state-of-the-art powertrain and vehicle development facility to support its customers in that region. Most recently, FEV completed construction on a technical center in Pune, India in 2009. In 2009, FEV also opened a world-class durability testing center in Brehna, Germany, near Leipzig with 31 engine and powertrain durability cells. The Brehna facility is currently undergoing additional expansion.

As vehicle propulsion systems continued to evolve, becoming more integrated and complex, FEV’s service capabilities have expanded into the area of transmission and driveline development. The introduction of electric and hybrid electric propulsion systems, as well as the development of alternative fuel vehicles, also provided opportunities for FEV to expand is service offering. FEV also provides services in the areas of vehicle integration and calibration, wind power, and test and instrumentation systems.
