Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Material Is Best According to SAE Study

Sealing Compound Outperforms Competitive Materials in Study to Identify the Best Materials for Use in New Environmentally Friendly Automotive Air-Conditioning Refrigerant

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, a worldwide leading supplier of high-quality sealing and bearing systems, announces its H7T3R Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) O-Ring material topped all others in the Cooperative Research Program CRP1234-2, a recent study conducted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

One aspect of the study focused on O-Ring materials, hoses and other air conditioning system components for permeation performance and fluid compatibility in HFO1234yf, a new refrigerant that has significantly lower global warming potential than the existing R134a standard refrigerant. The Trelleborg H7T3R material (widely known as
2920) gave permeability levels 50 percent less than any of the other HNBR materials tested as well as excellent results in fluid immersion and oil compatibility tests.

“As the automotive industry moves to reduce the environmental impact of refrigerant gases used in air conditioning systems, there is a high level of interest in HFO1234yf,” says Colin Macqueen, Director of Technology for Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Americas. “Our H7T3R material has been used for many years (under its previous reference

2920) to seal R134a and this latest study confirms its suitability for use in HFO1234yf systems. We expect the excellent sealing performance of H7T3R to be maintained for current users when changing refrigerants. The new refrigerant’s reduced global warming potential combined with H7T3R’s best in class permeation level will produce a significant improvement in emissions related to automotive air conditioning system seals.”

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions strives to provide leading solutions for today’s environmental and regulatory challenges, meeting alternate refrigerant requirements for both current and future advancements. Trelleborg is working closely with a growing number of OEMs and Tier1 customers to optimize solutions for their specific applications. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions also has Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer
(EPDM) materials to offer for use in HFO1234yf and development continues to further enhance their properties.
